How should I go about becoming a Screenplay writer?

I haven't been to college yet but I can't seem to find a counselor at my community college who can give me a definitive answer. Is it worth paying all the money in the world to go UCLA? I need some hope that i'm heading down the right path... I love writing science fiction and fiction and would to start working on a tv series (even a soap opera to start out) and eventually make movies. Should I think about interning at my local TV broadcast station too? Before I get my bachelors degree, what type of interning should I do and where?

buy book, read script and write one of yours. try to publish your script, i dont think you need to go to school for that but it always help. I sure half of the director of hollywood dont have degree...

On my side I would like to do the same but I live in canada.... good luck
I doubt it's that your counselor's won't give you definite answers - it's probably that they're not giving you the answer you want to hear.

Even if you actually are incredibly good at writing screenplay's, you still have about a 1% chance of ever getting your work out there.

Should you get your bachelors degree? Yes. You need to know more about the business and about writing and you need to make as many contacts as you can. Therefore, going to UCLA or anywhere in California (where the film business hangs it's hat) is beneficial. You also need something else to fall back on. A high school education is not that.

If you'd like to start working on a TV series, chances are you'd wind up working on a team of at least 20 writers, probably more. This will not happen tomorrow. You'll need an education, contacts, and to be published before you could even dream of applying for a job like that.
The best way to become a screenwriter, is to write screenplays. It is an art in comparison to a piano to me. You don't need any education much further than what you can find in a book, or even better, the internet.
Gotham writers workshop has tons of writing courses..screenplay writer is one. Go to www.gothamwriters.com

for the complete list
Have determination, ideas, the ability to work other peoples ideas, stamina, then ideas again. Persistence.... Internship an excellent way to test the waters, to get seen. Take a television and communications course, you should be versed in all aspects. Having examples of your work past and present. A well groomed appearance :) Kudos , just have more than one skill so you have something to fall back on as you establish yourself in this career. All the best!

ps. check a school near you
